CALKIT™ COREL LED COREL UAL VIS PAPI CHARGER Case Studies
CALKIT™ used as an emergency runway lighting system at UK airports. HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS AIRPORTS AUTHORITY, UK. Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd operates 10 airports in the North and West of Scotland.
HIA Ltd has used Metalite's first portable runway light, the LE58, at each of its airports for many years and in 1996 the company purchased their first CALKIT™, Metalite's trailer mounted portable runway lighting system. In 2003, as part of an ongoing commitment to meeting regulatory and safety requirements, a further three CALKIT™ trailers were acquired for use at Tiree, Stornaway and Islay airports. The CALKIT™s form part of the company's contingency plans to ensure that Highlands and Islands Airports can continue to function should a major power outage occur. CALKIT™ supporting peacekeeping missions.
Five of the systems were purchased by The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). Due to the size of the DRC most logistical support is carried out by air and MONUC operates 5 UN airfields throughout the country. Remote airfields, like Bunia near the border with Uganda, have no permanent runway lighting systems and safe airfield operations were confined to the hours of daylight before the introduction of the CALKIT™s and portable PAPIs. Two further CALKIT™ runway lighting systems and portable PAPI systems have been purchased for emergency deployment from the UN Logistical Air Base in Brindisi, Italy. The 66 COREL portable runway lights contained within the CALKIT™ trailer form a 2800m runway in Visual Flight Rule conditions or a 1680m runway in Instrument Flight Rule conditions. CALKIT™ supporting runway rehabilitation and refurbishment projects. HARARE AIRPORT, ZIMBABWE In 2001 Metalite supplied a CALKIT™ system with additional portable PAPIs and portable approach lights to the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe for use during the construction stage of the runway and taxiway rehabilitation project at Harare Airport.
CALKIT™ can support runway, taxiway and parking apron applications as well as being used to mark parts of the airfield that are closed or under construction. CALKIT™ used as a temporary runway lighting system on remote airstrips.
CALKIT™ has been used during some of the world's largest on shore oil and gas projects including Insalah, Algeria and Babo, Indonesia. CALKIT™ used as an emergency runway lighting system on unlit alternate runways. The single main runway at Campbeltown Airport Scotland is often seriously affected by cross winds making landing hazardous. CALKIT™ is deployed by the emergency services to light a short, unlicensed landing strip for Air Ambulance purposes. The system is also deployed at night in adverse weather conditions to train new pilots for short runway landings in bad weather. COREL portable landing lights used to mark emergency helipads.
Since the purchase by Manchester Police, further sets of CORELs have been supplied for helipad use to the Greater Metropolitan Police Force in London, UK and Thames Valley Police in Oxfordshire, UK.
